Telecommunications Products Business Plan

Telecommunications Products Business Plan

OSS Telecom Technology (Bend, Oregon) is a new offshoot company of OSS Telecom Technology Taiwan – a $300 million steel conglomerate. The main company was established to explore opportunities in operations support systems in the telecom software sector. The company has enjoyed a solid base of 24 telecom operators utilizing their software.

OSS Telecom Technology will pursue several goals to help them quickly gain market penetration. First, OSS Telecom Technology will offer a high-quality product that is high in value to the telecom industry. The ability to create superior human resources through training and competitive incentive programs is another important aspect of internal operations. OSS Telecom Technology plans to pursue a customer-centric model. This business model will guarantee complete customer satisfaction.

The Products

OSS Telecom Technology has a diverse OSS-based repertoire of products to support the telecom industry. CARIBOU is their first product, which is a subscription billing software solution. Within the CARIBOU package, traffic processing, bill generation, accounts payable, system administration, packaging, and customer care and administration are addressed. Each module within CARIBOU is its own robust application.

OSS Telecom Technology also offers the MEDUSA product. The MEDUSA product offers network support through configuration, control and management of network elements.

The Market

The market potential for OSS Telecom Technology&#8217’s products is tremendous. This is evidenced by what appears like an unstoppable increase in the telecom industry. The telecom industry is the largest growth industry at the moment and has contributed huge capital market gains. As a subset of the telecom sector, cell phones are growing at rates that were once unimaginable. One example is the forecast that cell phones will be available to 65% of children aged between 10 and 15. Broadband Internet service is also expected to see record penetration. Within three years it is expected that 85% of the population will have access to some sort of broadband connection with 60% of that group subscribing.

OSS Telecom Technology will target two market segments. Tier 2 telecom providers are the first. This segment is expected to grow at 8% annually and have 481 customers. The second targeted market segment will be Tier 3 telecom operators. While the annual growth rate of this segment is less at 6%, there are more potential customers, 2,011.

Management Team

OSS Telecom Technology assembled an experienced management group to manage the organization in this competitive market. They drew heavily on their industry experience to select the team. Because the telecom industry is highly technical, it is crucial to have detailed information and insight into this niche sector. Victor Smith has been appointed CEO. Victor has 25 years of telecom experience. Victor served as the COO of Atlas Telecom over the past 12 years. This is a significant player. Kenneth Jones is an additional Atlas Telecom executive. Kenneth Jones, who is the Executive vice president, has previously served as an executive at Harris Corp and NCR Corporation. Kenneth was involved in a variety of projects and brings a unique skill set to OSS Telecom Technology. James Jackson is also an Executive Vice President with experience from IBM, Atlas, Mosaics and the Lotus Development Corporation. Ken Smith brings with him topical experience from MIDCOM Communications, US Intelio Networks to complete the management team.

OSS Telecom Technology will achieve the Break-even point by leveraging its strong management team and superior product offerings. After a net loss in year one, net profit will rise in year two. The sales for OSS Telecom Technology are expected be modest in year one, but to see a significant increase in year three.

1.3 Keys to Success

Strategic Imperatives

OSS Telecom Technology has made a number of strategic choices that are clear and distinct in order to accomplish its mission. These choices have been developed based on two key factors:

  • The OSS marketplace
  • The company’s capabilities

These decisions translate into strategic imperatives that OSS Telecom Technology pursues to be a leader in the OSS market. There are three levels within the telecom market. Tier 1 operators have more subscribers than one billion, Tier 2, operators with 100,000 to one-million subscribers, and Tier 3, operators with less than 100,000 subscribers.

  • Value Focus: OSS Telecom Technology is focusing on Tier 3 operators. They will provide full-featured, scalable and reliable products and services at competitive prices. OSS Telecom Technology’s software products will have a lifecycle cost that is 20-40% lower than Tier 1 competitors like Kenan and LHS, but still offer all the services and features offered by these companies. While Tier 3 competitors such as Moscom are cheaper, they will not be able compete with the features or service OSS Telecom Technology provides.
  • Wireline & Product Portfolio OSS Telecom Technology’s product range will change from Global Systems for Mobile Communications. It will now include other wireless, fixed and Internet-based billing solutions. OSS Telecom Technology’s initial products were GSM-based. However, OSS Telecom Technology is expanding its product lines to include local billing and convergent capabilities. These are critical customer requirements.
  • Engineering Center of Excellence OSS Telecom Technology is committed to developing its low-cost and high-quality software development centers in Taiwan. These centers offer significant cost advantages over U.S.- and Europe based competitors.
  • Consultancy Services: OSS Telecom Technology combines consulting services with products in order to strengthen customer relationships and expand its product offering. We will be able to offer consulting services that are more tailored and customer-driven. OSS Telecom Technology seeks projects that can be made into products, and marketed to potential clients. OSS Telecom Technology will employ strict criteria to determine which consulting services projects it undertakes. If there is no opportunity to productize#8221 or reproduce the solution developed, the project will be abandoned.
  • Sales channels: Multi-national marketing and sales teams will develop both direct sales channels and indirect sales channels. OSS Telecom Technology established a network with experienced and incentivized marketing and sales personnel in order to maximize the opportunities in each area. These teams will create both direct customer relationships (through systems integrators and switch manufacturers, for example) as well indirect channels. OSS Telecom Technology can leverage its indirect channel partners. OSS Telecom Technology will dedicate resources to developing its indirect sales channel partnerships. Compaq is one of the partners that will enable OSS Telecom Technology expand its geographic reach and credibility. It will also allow it to acquire customers that are not possible otherwise. To support these partnerships, we will create specific programs for partner support.
